Mabon

Mabon is the Autumnal Equinox, (equal day and night) the second of three harvest festivals (first: Lughnasadh; third: Samhain).  This festival celebrates the Green Man and his descent into the underworld (Sun/Northern Hemisphere) as well as the Eleusinian Mysteries, aka Demeter and Persephone.

Ceres (Roman for Demeter) the Goddess of Grain, was the Great Earth Mother of Persephone. When Hades abducted Persephone to the underworld, Ceres searched the world, grieving for her lost daughter.  Ceres failed to nurture the grain and crops withered and died.  While Ceres grieved, the world fell into hunger until Zeus intervened, ordering Hades to return Persephone.

Hades did so, but first tricked Persephone into eating a bite of mystical pomegranate, which meant she was forced to return to the underworld for a portion of each year.  It is in these months that winter blankets the world and foliage goes dormant.
As Northern Hemisphere celebrates Mabon, Southern Hemisphere celebrates Eostara.

The Bay tree is sacred to Mabon – its action is preservation.

Harvest Home is a festival of reaping – gathering grains and crops that were previously sown, as well as a festival of gratitude and preparation for the long winter months ahead.

Equinox indicates balance – of not only solar and lunar hours, but also balance of conscious and subconscious principles – giving thanks for life and honoring the dead, honoring the light and the dark as they join into ONE.
